Industrial meat production is a leading contributor to climate change. Major meat companies are making pie-in-the-sky promises to be good stewards of the environment to fool consumers and distract from their climate pollution. Meanwhile, they continue to expand their production while making no meaningful changes to reduce emissions. FarmSTAND uses litigation to challenge this industry deception. Our settlement with Tyson Foods represents a major step to rein in climate greenwashing.

Concerned shoppers want to buy food that is made responsibly and sustainably and rely on labels and marketing for food on the grocery store shelves to navigate their choices. When brands and grocery stores make claims they can’t back up to sell products that cause harm, FarmSTAND uses the law to hold them accountable.

When grocery shoppers buy a product labeled as “natural,” they expect that the product is made in a way that is different and better than factory-farmed products. Big Meat companies take advantage of that perception and market products as natural, evoking a healthier choice, when in reality the animals are treated the same as other factory farmed animals. Our work exposed Hormel’s intentional choices to confuse consumers.

The dominant food system reaches far beyond the food on our plates. Big Ag giants are pushing methane gas made from massive amounts of animal manure as a climate solution. Really, it props up factory farming — and often requires increasing factory farming not to feed people, but to process waste into profit. Taxpayers and ratepayers are being deceived into paying for this dirty climate scam. FarmSTAND is taking action to stop the pipelines and utilities seeking to expand this program while calling it climate friendly.
